UNHCR: Yemen is the World’s Biggest Humanitarian Crisis

The risk of mass starvation is growing in many corners of the world including Yemen.

According to the UN refugee agency drought and conflict are putting over 20 million people at risk.

"We are raising our alarm level further by today warning that the risk of mass deaths from starvation among populations in the Horn of Africa, Yemen and Nigeria is growing," said the UNHCR spokesperson, Adrian Edwards.

However, Edwards singled out Yemen as the “world's biggest humanitarian crisis".

An estimated 19 million Yemenis are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, 17 million are food insecure and over 2 million children are suffering from malnutrition.

Unlike in other parts of the world, the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen is entirely man made, driven by a brutal Saudi bombardment and blocked of the country.

At least 12,000 people have been killed as a result of the Saudi-led campaign, which started in March 2015. And while aid agencies have asked for more assistance to be provided to the Yemeni people, western powers have remained largely silent over atrocities committed in Yemen, often providing Riyadh with military assistance and political cover on the international stage.
