The United Nations Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative for Yemen Jamie McGoldrick said that two years of war in Yemen has destroyed the lives of millions of people.
During a press conference in the capital Sana’a Tuesday, McGoldrick explained that the impact of this catastrophe was harsh on civilians, stressing that about seven million women, children and men could be the victims of famine that may occur this year.
He also stated that the Yemeni people are the main victims of a conflict they had nothing to do with.
McGoldrick added that more than 50,000 civilians were killed, injured or disabled during the two years of war.
The UN official said that he had reported atrocities, including the killing of 1,450 children and injuring at least 2,450 others, in addition to recruiting 1572 children to fight.
He explained that the last two years of this ongoing conflict have led to waves of prolonged displacement following military operations along the western coastal areas.
McGoldrick stated that the displacement is close to 50,000 people, with two million people displaced across the country. The UN official said that one million displaced people have temporarily returned home due to the deterioration of conditions in each of the regions of origin and displacement.
