Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis poured into the streets of Sana’a on Sunday marking two years since the start of the brutal Saudi war, which left a massive trail of death and destruction across Yemen.
Those taking part in the rally converged on Alsabeen Square in Sana’a, waving the national Yemeni flag and chanting slogans against the Saudi-led military offensive.
Senior Yemeni officials also participated in the protest.
Speaking at the event, Saleh Al Samad, the president of the Supreme Political Council, praised the nation’s firm resistance in the face of the Saudi aggression and said that Riyadh failed to bring Yemen to its knees despite all the money and resources at its disposal.
“Yemen’s resistance…proved to be more powerful than any weapon in the world,” Al Samad told the thousands of onlookers.
The official also held Saudi Arabia and its partners responsible for the collapse of peace talks talks between Yemen’s warring sides.
Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
The war has drawn widespread international condemnation.
More than half of Yemen’s 22 million people are currently living at emergency levels of food insecurity and need urgent relief – especially in remote rural areas that are often overlooked by humanitarian schemes.
An estimated 12,000 have been killed and nearly 20,000 others injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s infrastructure.
