The Saudi-led military campaign against Yemen had significant repercussions in exacerbating the health and humanitarian conditions, plunging the country into chaos with lack of security and instability.
Drugs smugglers are taking advantage of the situation to support their local markets.
According to Yemen’s Ministry of Health, shipments of anesthetics have entered in Yemeni markets without any control by the competent authorities.
According to information from the Health Ministry, most of these valleys contraband entered Yemen on behalf of the ministry without customs and tax-exempted. However, the ministry did not receive the names of the stores or traders.
Yemeni sources said that due to the war and despite the maritime interdiction and ground and aerial blockade imposed by the coalition, drug smuggling is witnessing a revival.
The sources adds that smuggling is common among the traders belonging to the Saudi-led alliance and the processes are taking place at the ports controlled by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi forces.
Such medicinal drugs being smuggled are "midazolam" which has calming and hypnotic effect and Valium (a sedative).
The health ministry has formed a committee to oversee these markets in cooperation with the security forces.
According to the sources, 50% of the smuggled drugs in the Yemeni market is of unknown origin and unsafe to use.
However, poverty and the Saudi blockade are forcing Yemenis to buy cheap goods, including smuggled drugs because of the low prices.
