Yemeni forces gained control over the al-Qarn and Dafinah villages in the al-Khobe district, which sits southwest of Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh. The advances by the Yemenis followed fierce clashes in the area according to an anonymous military source.
Dozens of Saudi soldiers were reported killed or injured and six of their armored vehicles, including two Abrams tanks, destroyed.
The Yemeni troops also succeeded in capturing the strategic al-Khobe road in Jizan, blocking off the connecting route between the Qaem Zobayd district and the al-Abadiya area.
Military operations by the Yemenis, deep inside Saudi territory, are a response to the continued Saudi-led bombardment of their country, which started in March 2015.
Modest estimates put the number of killed in Yemen at around 10,000, including 4,000 women and children.
