Saudi-led Warplanes Bomb Yemen’s Capital before Talks

The Saudi-led coalition warplanes bombarded Yemen’s capital of Sanaa overnight as the country’s warring factions prepared for talks expected to start in Geneva in Switzerland on Monday.

The Saudi-led airstrikes caused big explosions before dawn and hit locations south and west of Sanaa, a Reuters witness said, as the coalition in its nearly 12-week aggression continues to pound the impoverished country of Yemen.

Meanwhile, United Nations [UN] Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was in Geneva for talks aimed at reaching a deal to end the fighting in which thousands of people have been killed since March.

According to the UN, at least 2,300 people have been killed and over 7,330 injured in Yemen’s conflict since March 19. The UN has repeatedly stressed that the actual toll could be higher, as many of those killed and injured do not pass through the health authorities.

The US-led Saudi aggression has also displaced hundreds of thousands since March.

Saudi Arabia began its US-led military aggression on Yemen on March 26 -- without a UN mandate -- in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement, and to restore power to Yemen’s fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is a close ally of Saudi Arabia.
