Saudi-led Coalition Quick to Declare Yemen Ceasefire a Failure

The Saudi-led coalition has declared an already shaky ceasefire in Yemen a failure, alleging violations by the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

On Thursday, the spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition Ahmed Assiri said, "There is no ceasefire at all."

A ceasefire went into effect at 23:59 local time on Wednesday.

Riyadh agreed to a three-day pause in fighting after coming under pressure from the international community over the staggering civilian death toll from its military campaign.

On October 8, a funeral hall packed with thousands of mourners in Sana’a was targeted by Saudi jets, killing over 140 people and injuring more than 500 others.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 10,000 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
