Riyadh Claims to be Ready for Ceasefire if Houthis Agree

Saudi Arabia is prepared to agree to a ceasefire in Yemen if the Houthi Ansarulla movement agrees, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Monday.

But previous attempts to reach a ceasefire in Yemen ended in failure largely due to continuous Saudi bombardments as well as Saudi preconditions aimed at disarming the Ansarullah movement and their allies.

Jubeir’s announcement comes amid growing pressure on Riyadh over the high number of civilian casualties in Yemen.

Both the United States and Great Britain called on Sunday for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Yemen to end the violence.

A Saudi-led coalition air strike a week ago on a funeral gathering in the Yemeni capital Sana’a killed more than 140 people and injured hundreds of others.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 10,000 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
