Spanish Congress Calls for Yemen Embargo

Local Editor

The Spanish Congress has called on its own government - as well as the European Union (EU) and UN Security Council - for an embargo on arms sales to both sides involved in Yemen’s civil war if there is a risk of those arms being used in the conflict.

The move came as one of the main contenders in the conflict, Saudi Arabia, which is leading an Arab coalition against the HouthiAnsarullah movement, is expected to approve the purchase of five corvettes from Spanish state-owned shipbuilder Navantia.

The motion put forward by the regional Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC - Catalan Republican Left) party on 6 April received the backing of the Socialist Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE) and the anti-austerity Podemos grouping.
