Kerry Hopes for Talks in Weeks on Ending Yemen Conflict

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Monday it may be possible to hold talks over the next few weeks on ending the conflict in Yemen.

"Over the course of the next week it may become possible to try to engage in some productive conversations about how to bring that conflict to a close," Kerry told reporters after talks at the State Department with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

He did not elaborate, saying only that they discussed the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

Yemen has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March last year. The Saudi military strikes were launched to supposedly undermine the Ansarullah movement and bring the fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, back to power.

At least 8,278 people, among them 2,236 children, have been killed and 16,015 others injured since March 2015. The strikes have also taken a heavy toll on the impoverished country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.
