The International Committee of the Red Cross described as catastrophic the humanitarian situation in Yemen amid an ongoing military invasion and crippling siege by Saudi Arabia.
As the war enters its ninth month, eighty percent of the Yemeni population requires some form of humanitarian assistance. The health sector is crumbling with dozens of hospitals and clinics damaged or destroyed by the conflict, and those that remain are overwhelmed.
"The overall humanitarian situation in Yemen is nothing short of catastrophic. On average you have 25 people killed in Yemen every day, another 125 that are injured. This has been ongoing for more than eight months by now. The civilian population is suffering on multiple fronts. You have ongoing airstrikes, you have heavy ground fighting, and then you have on top of that restrictions on the movement of goods and services," said Rima Kamal, spokeswoman for the International Committee for the Red Cross in Sana’a.
The UN earlier this week said Western nations were quietly increasing pressure on Saudi Arabia to seek a deal to end the war. A Security Council meeting on Yemen is expected later this month, and a seven-day ceasefire starts on Monday. But in the meantime, the situation on the ground continues to spiral out of control.
