United Nations [UN] Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the latest extremist attack at the al-Bolayli mosque in Yemen’s capital of Sana’a, which occurred during prayers for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday and martyred at least 25 people on Thursday. The so-called "Daesh" ["ISIL"] extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson in New York, Ban expressed his deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims and to the people of Yemen.
"Such attacks against places of worship, or civilians anywhere, cannot be justified by any cause", the statement said.
The Secretary-General also called for a full investigation of the bombing and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
The attack came as a Saudi-led coalition backed by the United States has been carrying out a military aggression on Yemen by launching airstrikes against the country since March 26. The airstrikes have not been authorized by the United Nations [UN].
