Russia, Iran Renew Call for Negotiated Solution to Crises in Yemen, Syria

Senior Foreign Ministry officials from Iran and Russia underlined the two countries’ support for finding a political solution to the ongoing crises in Yemen and Syria on Monday.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, as well as Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, discussed the situation in war-ravaged Yemen and Syria in a phone call earlier the same day.

The ministry said in a statement: "The sides underlined that there was no alternative to finding a political solution to the Syrian and Yemeni crises in line with the international law and the UN Charter".

Yemen has been the target of a deadly US-led Saudi military aggression since Gulf coalition forces, backed by the United States, began launching airstrikes against the country on March 26. The airstrikes have not been authorized by the United Nations [UN].

The ’civilian’ death toll in Yemen has risen to at least 1,916, with another 4,186 civilians wounded since the escalation of the conflict in March, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights [OHCHR] reported recently last month.

Syria has also been gripped by a deadly conflict since 2011 as forces loyal to the Syrian government have been fighting several extremist groups, including "Daesh" ["ISIL"].
