Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, said on Wednesday that Iran’s principled policy towards Yemen remains to be the call for a halt on foreign military attacks on Yemen and settlement of the conflicts through dialogue.

In a telephone conversation with the UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on Wednesday, Abdollahian expressed Iran’s support for any political solution to the Yemen crisis that entails Yemeni-Yemeni talks.

For his part, Cheikh Ahmed hailed the idea of a ceasefire in different parts of Yemen and a simultaneous onset of political dialogue among the Yemeni groups according to the UN resolutions, without elaborating on a UN plan for the war-ravaged country.

He also said that political negotiations are underway in a positive atmosphere to settle the Yemeni conflicts despite difficulties.

A Saudi-led coalition backed by the United States has been carrying out a military aggression on Yemen by launching airstrikes against the country since March. The airstrikes have not been authorized by the United Nations [UN].

The ’civilian’ death toll in Yemen has risen to at least 1,916, with another 4,186 civilians wounded since the escalation of the conflict in March, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights [OHCHR] reported recently this month.

The US-led Saudi aggression began in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former Yemeni President, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Saudi Arabia.
