The European Commission is increasing its humanitarian aid by €12 million for people affected by the crisis in Yemen, with the EU commissioner saying that the humanitarian crisis in the country is reaching catastrophic proportions. 

A Saudi-led coalition backed by the United States has been carrying out airstrikes against Yemen since March. The airstrikes have not been authorized by the UN.

EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, said: "The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is reaching catastrophic proportions with 80% of the population now in need of assistance".

"Humanitarian pauses are vital to enable humanitarian workers and organisations deliver much needed aid. These pauses must be granted unconditionally by all the parties to the conflict".

Furthermore, he reiterated his call for the adherence to International Humanitarian Law by protecting civilians.
