UN Security Council Consultations on Yemen Expected: Diplomats

The UN Security Council was expected to hold consultations on Yemen on Tuesday as Saudi-led air strikes shattered a humanitarian truce, diplomats said.

Ambassadors from the council’s 15 member states were to hear a report by the head of UN humanitarian operations Stephen O’Brien before meeting behind closed doors.

The Saudi-led coalition had declared a temporary five day "humanitarian" ceasefire beginning Monday, but on Tuesday it launched air strikes north of Aden and in nearby Lahj province in Yemen.

A Saudi-led coalition backed by the United States has been carrying out airstrikes against Yemen since March. The airstrikes have not been authorized by the UN.
