Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the UN special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed held a meeting in the capital Tehran.

During the talks, Zarif and Ould Cheikh Ahmed discussed the latest developments in Yemen.

Both officials particularly underlined the need to end the humanitarian disaster in the Arab country and find comprehensive political solutions to the crisis.

On Saturday, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs, stated that Iran supports all the efforts by the UN to put an end to the war in the crisis-hit Yemen.

Ansari made the remarks during a meeting with the visiting UN official.

The Iranian diplomat expressed deep concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

For his part, the UN envoy urged the Islamic republic to support the UN efforts aiming to find a political solution to the Yemeni crisis.

Saudi Arabia has been waging war against Yemen since March 2015 in a bid to eliminate the Houthi Ansarullah movement and reinstall a Riyadh-friendly former president. Neither objectives have been achieved by the Saudi-led coalition so far, and the war has spiraled into a humanitarian crisis.

Stephen O'Brien, the UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, has stated that the “man-made” outbreak of cholera in Yemen which has affected over 300,000 people was “a direct result” of the Saudi-led aggression.
