Stop US Involvement In The War In Yemen

By Berry Friesen

On Nov. 2, the U.S. House will vote on House Concurrent Resolution 91, a bipartisan proposal directing President Donald Trump to remove U.S. military forces from unauthorized involvement in the ugly war in Yemen.

In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition began bombing Yemen and imposing a blockade on its major ports. This was in retaliation for the emergence of a governing coalition in Yemen that Saudi Arabia didn’t like. From the start of the war, U.S. forces played key roles in support of Saudi-led aggression: intelligence and logistical support, aerial refueling of attacking planes, and accelerated arms sales.

The war has produced a “Level 3” humanitarian emergency, the worst category on the United Nations’ scale. During the 30-month war, Saudi-led bombing has left Yemen’s water and sanitation systems in near ruin and almost 80 per cent of the population dependent on humanitarian aid. According to the U.N., 6.8 million people are one step from famine. To date, 750,000 cases of cholera have been identified. At least 3,200 civilians were reportedly killed by Saudi-led forces; 1,200 of the dead are children.

In early October, I asked Congressman Lloyd Smucker to support Resolution 91 and stop U.S military support for this awful and illegal war. He replied with a letter that did not refer to the war in any way, but spoke only of al-Qaida in Yemen, a terrorist group that has enjoyed strong support from within Saudi Arabia.

LNP, you can help. Please increase coverage of this war and U.S. support for it. Perhaps the lack of media interest helps explain why Congressman Smucker had nothing to say about it in his letter to me.
