Amman, the capital of Jordan, will be the headquarters of the office of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Jordanian foreign ministry has announced.

According to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the announcement was made following a meeting between the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed and Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi.

This came days after Yemen’s Supreme Political Council (SPC) regarded UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed persona non grata.

Saleh al-Samad, the head of the SPC, said that the UN envoy is “forbidden” from returning to Sana’a and accused him of bias, demanding the United Nations choose a new envoy who respects the will of the Yemeni people.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, allegedly returned to Yemen for a new round of consultations to discuss the chances of military truce and the resumption of Yemen’s peace negotiations stalled since August 2016, reported diplomatic sources on Thursday.

So far Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed has failed to bring about any peace agreement between the warring Yemeni sides.

More than six attempts to clinch a ceasefire in Yemen have floundered, including a three-day October truce in 2016 that fell apart as soon as it went into force to allow aid deliveries to millions homeless and hungry.

Yemen has been under military attacks by Saudi Arabia since late March last year. The Saudi military strikes were launched in a failed effort to undermine the popular Houthi Ansarullah movement and bring the former fugitive president back to power.

More than 12,000 people, among them 2,236 children, have been killed and 19,343 others injured since the start of the aggression. The strikes have also taken a heavy toll on the impoverished country’s facilities and infrastructure, destroying many hospitals, schools, and factories.
