Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received a royal welcome from King Salman as he landed Sunday in Saudi Arabia for a visit to boost ties following months of frosty relations.

Salman, surrounded by key Saudi officials, greeted Sisi as he stepped off the plane in the capital Riyadh and hosted him for lunch, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

The office of the Egyptian president announced the visit in a statement on Friday, saying that Sisi was invited by Salman and that the trip was focused on "bolstering strategic relations between the two countries".

It said Salman and Sisi would discuss "regional and international issues of common interest".

Last week the spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen was forced to backtrack after he claimed that Cairo had offered to deploy 40,000 ground troops for Riyadh’s failing military campaign.

Egyptian sources refuted the claims saying that Cairo refused Saudi requests asking for ground troops in Yemen.

Sisi met Salman on the sidelines of an Arab League summit in Jordan last month after months of apparent tensions between the two allies stemming from a wide range of issues, including disagreements over Yemen and Syria.
