The Yemeni army backed by the popular committees foiled Monday an attempt by the Saudi-backed mercenaries to infiltrate toward the northern Thubab district, a military official told the state-run news agency Saba.

The mercenaries tried to infiltrate to al-Jadaid area. Dozens of mercenaries were killed and injured, including al-Qaeda members and Sudanese soldiers.

The official said the Saudi-led coalition warplanes and Apache helicopters kept flying over the area to support the troops.

The mercenaries backed by Emirati, Saudi and Sudanese troops as well as al-Qaeda and Daesh militm have attempted many times to advance towards Kahbob and al-Omari areas over the last three weeks.

All their attempts were thwarted by the army and popular forces. The army has killed hundreds of the militants and crashed over 100 military vehicles, the official said.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 11,403 people have been killed and over 19,343 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.

Yemeni forces have been engaged in retaliatory attacks against the Saudi forces deployed in the country as well as targets inside Saudi Arabia.
