UN Envoy: Yemen Ceasefire Should Come before any New Talk Round

UN Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed affirmed that a ceasefire should come before any new round of talks on the Yemeni conflict.

In a news conference, Ahmed called to respect the holy month of Ramadan and to stop the fighting, saying that, "It is a moral obligation and part of our obligation vis à vis international humanitarian law, particularly during this period of Ramadan, to have this pause as soon as possible. But it has to be a pause that can be respected and that cannot be subject to violations. This will be the objective of my next consultations".

"This is an intra-Yemeni dialogue and it must be led by the Yemenis", he said.

He said that what has been reached in Switzerland’s Geneva can be built upon in the forthcoming consultations, expressing his optimism over further peace talks, Yemen News Agency SABA reported.

Ahmed said he is going to head to New York in order to brief the Security Council, saying that, "I will inform them of the results of these preliminary consultations and the next steps".

He confirmed that there is not a specific date for the next consultations.

UN-backed peace talks in Geneva on a cease-fire in Yemen ended on Friday without a deal as a Saudi-led coalition backed by the United States continued to carry out further airstrikes against the country since March.
