According to Yemen’s Saba news agency, the country’s Ansarullah movement welcomed a new peace initiative on Tuesday spearheaded by the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry’s plan aims to achieve a lasting cessation to the 22-month conflict.

The Ansarullah-led National Salvation Government also called for the immediate lifting of the blockade imposed by the Saudi-led coalition, which has been bombing Yemen since last March in the hope of reinstating fugitive former President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

"The National Salvation Government welcome the new peace call, including the roadmap proposed by UN envoy Ould Cheikh Ahmed as a basis for positive final negotiations to end the war, the blockade and reach an honorable comprehensive political compromise," read a statement carried by Saba.

During his last visit to Riyadh as Secretary of State over the weekend, Kerry opined that a ceasefire in Yemen could be reached within two weeks.

"The U.S. will work with Britain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to achieve a new pause in the fighting," Kerry said during a joint news conference with his Saudi counterpart Adel Al-Jubeir.

This is the eighth ceasefire attempt since the Saudis launched their
military campaign against Yemen.

Over 11,400 Yemenis have been killed and another 16,000 injured during that period.
