Yemeni Army Spokesman Calls Allegations Of Mecca Missile Attack ’Cover’ For Saudi War Crimes

Yemen’s army spokesperson, Brigadier General Sharaf Ghalib Luqman, dismissed allegations suggesting that his country’s military formations fired a missile at the holy city of Mecca last week.

The allegations fuelled by Riyadh and Washington were described as baseless lies by the General who asserted that the world is fully aware of the fact that the ballistic missile (Burkan 1) targeted a military base in Jeddah.

The Saudis initially claimed to have intercepted the ballistic missile launched 65 kilometers from Mecca, suggesting that the holy city was the target.

According to Luqman however, the UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed is also complicit in circulating the Saudi version of events.

The army spokesman accused Ould Cheikh Ahmed of covering-up, "the anti-humanitarian crimes committed daily by the Saudi regime" and granting "the Saudi regime more justifications to commit further crimes."

The spokesperson for Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement
Mohammad Abdulsalam, echoed a similar sentiment a day earlier, accusing Ould Cheikh Ahmed of violating "his mission as a peace envoy, and turned into an instigator of war".

For his part General Luqman vowed that ballistic missile strikes would continue until the Saudi aggression against Yemen is halted.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
