Yemeni Army Secures Areas in Jawf

According to official sources the Yemeni army has secured more ground in the country’s northwestern province of Jawf. Yemeni soldiers reportedly killed dozens of Saudi-backed mercenaries, wounding and capturing scores of others, in what is being described as a unique operation.

The Popular Committee Forces, which include the Houthi Ansurullah movement, assisted the army in securing the al- Kawaihsh area as well as hilltops in the al-Ghaile district of Jawf.

Fierce battles were reported in the area resulting in the withdrawal of the Saudi-backed formations.

The current conflict, which has resulted in over 10,000 civilian deaths and a humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen, was launched by Saudi Arabia in March 2015. The operation was designed to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

But serious military setbacks and accusations of war crimes have put a dent in Riyadh’s plans.
