Churkin: Yemen Humanitarian Crisis Worse than the Syrian one

Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin, who currently chairs the UN Security Council, has declared the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen to be worst than that of Syria.

The mainstream media has made much of the conflict in Syria while governments have often been selective in what aspects of the war should be covered and what aspects should be covered up.

But when it comes to the conflict in Yemen, the international community has virtually ignored the unfolding of the humanitarian crisis.

According to Churkin, the consequences of the 18-month long Saudi war on Yemen have created conditions which are even worse than those of the nearly six-year long conflict in Syria.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 10,000 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.

Yemeni forces have been engaged in retaliatory attacks against the Saudi forces deployed in the country as well as targets inside Saudi Arabia.
