Saudi warplanes have carried out airstrikes against the Yemeni capital Sana’a, targeting a crowded funeral procession.

Yemen’s health services are reporting that 144 people were killed and another 527 wounded in the assaults. The Saudi jets conducted at least nine airstrikes on Khamis street in southern Sana’a. The bombing caused a massive fire, completely destroying the building where the procession was being held.

According to the Lebanese Al Manar television, the Commander of the Yemeni Republican Guard as well as the commander of the security forces in Sana were among the dead.

The number of casualties is expected to rise.

Yemen’s Interior Minister, Jalal al-Ruwaishan, was burying his father when the funeral was attacked.

Yemen’s al-Masirah television said hospitals in the capital were desperately in need of blood donations.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 10,000 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
