Russia Urges Not to Use Military Force Against Civilians in Yemen

Using military force against peaceful citizens and civilian facilities in Yemen is absolutely unacceptable, Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters on Thursday commenting on the new escalation in violence in the country.

"The situation in Yemen arouses concerns," the diplomat said. "Reports say there have been new victims among the civilian population after the active phase of a military confrontation resumed," she added.

"The use of military force against civilians and civilian facilities is absolutely unacceptable," Zakharova stressed.

Moscow called to act in the framework of the international law to prevent similar incidents in the future. Zakharova underlined Russia’s position "if favor of abandoning the logic of war in the country as soon as possible and achieving sustainable settlement based on the UN Security Council’s resolutions and the National Dialogue Conference."

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 10,000 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
