Four people were killed and several others injured on Sunday in Saudi air raids on Kawkaban historical city in Shebam district of Mahweet province.

The Saudi aggression targeted the city’s main gate, the archeological castle, and buildings and historical monuments located in al-Qashla zone, at the entrance of the city, a local official said.

He added that the air raids led to the destruction of the gate, many homes and archaeological buildings dating back to the 2nd century AD.

Many families are still under the debris, the official said, stressing the rescue teams found difficulties to enter the city due to the massive destruction caused by the air strikes in the city.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 8,300 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
