Iran, UN Hold Talks on Yemen

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the UN special envoy for Yemen, held phone conversation on Saturday on the latest developments in Yemen.

Amir-Abdollahian said the situation in Yemen is worsening and terrorism is spreading at the southern parts of the country.

He expressed Iran’s support for the UN envoy’s efforts and highlighted the importance of finding a political solution to the crisis and brokering dialogue among the Yemeni sides.

For his part, the UN official praised Iran’s "constructive approaches" in fighting terrorism.

Yemen has become one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The UN says famine looms as over half the population, or 14.4 million people, face hunger and not even its hospitals are spared.

Saudi Arabia began its deadly campaign against Yemen in late March 2015. The strikes were meant to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore power to fugitive former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

About 8,300 people have been killed and over 16,000 injured since Riyadh launched the airstrikes. The Saudi aggression has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s facilities and infrastructure.
