UN Deplores Expulsion of OHCHR Official in Yemen

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the expulsion of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights [OHCHR] representative in Yemen, George Abu al-Zulof.

The decision to declare Abu al-Zulof persona non grata has been taken by the fugitive Hadi’s government after days of the organization declaration on receiving reports confirm the use of cluster bombs by the Saudi-led coalition in Hajjah province, which it described as " appalling".

"The Secretary-General stresses that United Nations staff must never be threatened or sanctioned for doing their work, which is based on the United Nations Charter," a statement issued by his spokesman said.

In the statement, the UN Secretary-General voiced his "extreme concern" for the safety of the remaining national and international staff.

Impeding the United Nations’ human rights work can only be harmful for the country’s return to peace and stability, he added.

He recalled that the people of Yemen have suffered grave human rights violations, pointing out that the OHCHR is actively and effectively helping to document these violations, reiterating his full confidence in the OHCHR representative in Sana’a.
