The Yemeni government, led by the Houthi movement, and its foe the resigned Hadi regime exchanged 20 prisoners through a tribal mediation on Monday, a military official in the Hadi regime said.

"A total of 10 soldiers and 10 revolutionaries were set free," Yahya al-Hasir, head of the prisoners committee, told Xinhua by phone.

The swap took place in Moton district in the Hadi-controlled northeastern province of Jawf.

Previous local mediation had succeeded in several swap deals between the rival forces.

Yemen has been plagued in a war since late 2014. A Saudi-led coalition backing the former Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi launched a military campaign against the country to forcefully reinstate Hadi.
