The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, was “deeply shocked by the appalling tragedy that claimed so many innocent lives … in Saada including children under the age of 15.”

In a statement issued on Thursday, Griffiths urged “all to exert more efforts to end the conflict through an inclusive intra-Yemeni dialogue.”

“I so hope that all parties will engage constructively in the political process, including consultations scheduled in Geneva in September,” read the statement.

The special envoy also extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

On Thursday, Saudi-led coalition fighter jets struck a bus carrying school children. More than 51 people were killed and 79 others injured.

According to the Yemeni health minister Taha al-Motawakel, 40 children were killed and 56 others were wounded in Thursday’s massacre.
