German Opposition Proposes Bill Seeking to Ban & Recall Arms Shipments To Saudi Arabia, UAE

A draft bill proposed by the German opposition Die Linke party could see Berlin ban arms exports to Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for their role in the bloody war in Yemen.

In January, the German government had already announced that it would halt weapons sales to states involved in the campaign against Yemen.

But the newly proposed bill also aims to prevent the delivery of all other related goods and services and reserves the rights to retroactively recall previously agreed upon deals.

The draft specifically mentions patrol boats bought by Saudi Arabia, which were used to blockade Yemeni ports from receiving aid to help alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in the country.

A Saudi-led coalition, which groups a number of Arab states including Bahrain, launched its military campaign in Yemen in March 2015.

According to the UN, the conflict has killed more than 10,000 people and left Yemen facing the “worst humanitarian crisis in the world”.
