Longtime Yemen's Ansarullah member and revolutionary activist Mahdi Mohammed Hussein Al-Mashat was officially sworn in as President of Yemen by parliament on Wednesday.
During the official ceremony, Mahdi Al-Mashat was officially appointed President of the Supreme Political Council, the position held by Saleh Ali al-Sammad until his assassination by the Saudi aggressor on April 19.
Following his appointment, the new President spoke to the nation in front of parliament, offering his condolences to all Yemenis for the martyrdom of President al-Sammad.
“This enemy has chosen open war,” President Al-Mashat said, adding that “the enemy exacerbates its mistakes, (…) and doubles the size of similarity between it [Saudi Arabia] and its allies from Al-Qaeda and Daesh in thought, behavior, concept, practice, brutality and ugliness.”
Mahdi Al-Mashat furthermore blamed the United States of America of being an accomplice to the murder, through its support to the Saudi war machine. He added that the political assassination of a foreign political leader is a gross violation of Yemen’s national sovereignty under international law.
Mahdi Al-Mashat is a long-time member of Ansarullah and revolutionary activist. He worked for the office of the Leader of the Revolution, Sayyid Abdul-Malik Badreddin al-Houthi, up until the September 21 Revolution in 2014. In 2016, he negotiated on behalf of the revolutionary government of Yemen during the Kuwait Peace Talks. On 16 May, he was appointed to the Supreme Political Council, the highest executive body of the National Salvation Government.
