Already struggling to cope with a dire humanitarian crisis, war-torn Yemen is now facing the fastest-growing cholera epidemic ever recorded, with some 1,039,005 cholera suspected cases as of 17 January, the United Nations Cholera Response Dashboard reported Wednesday. That is an increase of 989 cases in 24 hours.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that there have been nearly 2,244 associated deaths.

In decembet 2017, WHO reported that the total number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen has crossed one million, urging greater efforts to tackle the outbreak and deal with the deteriorating health situation in the war-torn nation.

“The epidemic is not yet over and more concerted efforts need to be deployed to ensure that it is controlled in the immediate term and prevented from reoccurring in the near future,” WHO spokesperson Tarik Jašarevic told a press briefing in Geneva.

According to WHO, 99.7 per cent of the people who became sick with suspected cholera and who could access health services survived.
