Rouhani: If Saudis Stopped Bombing, Yemen Would Do The Same

The Iranian President, Sheikh Hassan Rouhani, described the recent missile strike on Riyadh’s international airport as a legitimate response by Yemen to the bloody Saudi-led military campaign.

“How should the Yemeni people react to the bombardment of their country? So they are not allowed to use their own weapons? You stop the bombardment first and see if the Yemenis would not do the same,” the Iranian president said on Wednesday.

Saudis have accused Iran of "direct military aggression" after Yemen’s Ansarullah movement fired a ballistic missile at Riyadh over the weekend. The kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman claimed on Tuesday that the Iranians supplied the missile.

The allegations have been dismissed by Tehran as "contrary to reality".

For his part, Rouhani added that the Saudis had made a strategic mistake by allying themselves with the US and Israel’s “Zionist regime,” while making an enemy out of Iran.

“You are mistaken if you think Iran is not your friend, but the US and Israel are. This mentality is a strategic mistake and miscalculation,” added the Iranian president,” he added.

Earlier, Washington called on the United Nations to take action against Iran over the missile attack on Riyadh.

The Trump White House has been fuelling tensions between Riyadh and Tehran in recent months by adopting a highly hostile attitude towards Iran.

The crisis, which escalated in recent days extended to other parts of the region including Lebanon, where it is widely believed that the recent resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri was the result of pressure from Riyadh.
