UN: Saudi Blockade Hindering Aid Deliveries To Starving Yemenis

The United Nations has said that Saudi Arabia’s decision to shut down Yemen’s air, sea and land borders has prevented the UN from sending aid to the war-torn country.

"There were no flight clearances granted to our flights today…We expected to have two flights going and those are on hold for now," said UN spokesman Farhan Haq on Monday.

He added that UN officials are currently trying to persuade the Saudis to permit aid delivery to Yemen, where some seven million people are suffering from severe malnutrition.

On Sunday, the kingdom announced the tightening of its blockade on Yemen, after a missile strike targeted the international airport near the Saudi capital.

The Yemeni army on Sunday, said that it had targeted Saudi Arabia’s King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a long distance Borkan H2 ballistic missile.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a destructive military campaign against Yemen since March 2015 to reinstate former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and crush the Houthi movement.

The campaign has devastated the country’s infrastructure and created a humanitarian catastrophe, leaving tens of thousands dead, including women and children.
