Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi condemned Saudi Arabia’s Wednesday bombardment of a market in Yemen which has claimed the lives of at least 29 civilians.
Qassemi also urged the United Nations and other international organizations to investigate the case and condemn Saudi bombardment of civilians in Yemen.
“Saudi Arabia is after compensating its failures in political and field arenas with such violent actions against civilians and innocent people of Yemen,” asserted the Iranian diplomat after offering sympathies to the bereaved families and the Yemeni nation.
He also referred to Riyadh’s blocking of humanitarian aids to the war-hit people of Yemen and described it as a blatant violation of international conventions of proving help and human rights charters.
He called on the United Nations and other countries in Saudi coalition against Yemen to immediately stop bombarding civilians and take serious measures to protect women and children caught under Saudi bombs.
According to the UN, so far, more than 12,000 people, 60% of them civilians, have been killed and 49,900 injured in Saudi air strikes against Yemenis since March 2015,
The conflict has also left 20.7 million Yemeni civilians in need of humanitarian assistance, created the world's largest food security emergency, and led to a cholera outbreak that is believed to have affected 884,000 people and caused 2,184 deaths.
Last month, the United Nations blacklisted the coalition for infanticide during its war on Yemen.
The annual blacklist, released by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on October 5, said the actions of the Riyadh-led alliance in Yemen “objectively led to that party being listed for the killing and maiming of children.”
