A senior officer in military intelligence agency loyal to the regime of resigned president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi was killed in a drive-by shooting in the southeastern province of Hadramaut on Tuesday, a security source told Xinhua.

The officer on his way to a mosque for prayers was shot by masked gunmen who then fled the scene, the security source said on condition of anonymity.

"One of our military intelligence officers was killed after the assailants opened fire on his head using silenced weapons," the source said.

Local residents told Xinhua that they rushed to rescue the officer but he died at the scene.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Military officers blamed militants of the Yemen-based al-Qaida offshoot for a series of assassinations and armed attacks, mostly in the country's southern regions.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, also known locally as Ansar al-Sharia emerged in January 2009, is considered one of the most serious threats to the Yemeni government and neighboring oil-rich Saudi Arabia.
