EU High Representative for International Politics and Security, Federica Mogherini, wrote an open letter to the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, calling for action on the humanitarian disaster in Yemen.

"I write to appeal for your immediate action in response to the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen. Cholera has spread at an alarming rate, 14.5 million people are without access to safe drinking water. We have a small window to prevent the total collapse of public services and institutions. Your decisions can reverse the crisis," Mogherini wrote.

She also called for a ceasefire in the region, for a general exit to Yemen and for the removal of bureaucratic obstacles to the movement of humanitarian supplies.

According to the Red Cross, every hour in Yemen, at least one person dies because of cholera.

The largest epidemic of cholera in Yemen today began due to non-compliance with hygiene rules, deterioration of sanitary conditions and interruptions in water supply throughout the country. The collection of waste also ceased in large cities. In mid-May, a state of emergency was imposed in Yemen due to cholera.
