Aden’s Christian Cemetery Desecrated

The Christian cemetery in the Yemeni port city of Aden was desecrated this week. The tombs of the Sisters of Mother Teresa killed in a terrorist attack in 2016 weren’t spared either.

"The attack on the Christian cemetery in Aden occurred two nights ago,” said Mgr Paul Hinder, apostolic vicar of southern Arabia (UAE, Oman and Yemen). “The attackers, whose identity is still unknown, damaged crosses and tombs."

A terrorist attack in March 2016 killed a group of nuns and led to the abduction of Fr Tom Uzhunnalil, an Indian Salesian missionary in Yemen. The clergymen was recently released after months in captivity.

"This is not the first time that such a thing happens, but the damage to a cemetery is a serious thing. Of course, such episodes of violence do not only affect Christians, but they confirm the ongoing difficult situation and violence," Mgr Paul Hinder added.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a destructive military campaign against Yemen since March 2015 to reinstate former president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and crush the Houthi movement.

Saudi and UAE-backed militants, which include Al-Qaeda linked groups, captured Aden in July 2015.
